Signs Have Much to Say

Written by Lauren Stern and illustrated by James Bevelander

Learn why signage and wayfinding matter!

Follow Lauren and her furry friend, Dewey, as signs have them find their way around town. Their fun-filled adventure will take them to the zoo, hospital, school, and more.

This book has been in the works for almost a year. It started out as a spark of an idea during the summer of 2021 and grew from there. We hope you enjoy it as much as we have creating it!

  • Finally, a children's book on what I do!

I have a granddaughter and try to read to her at every opportunity I can. I love adventure stories and I love signs, since I design them for a living. My granddaughter is a little young (almost 2), but the illustrations and story draw her in as I point out what is going on while I read to her and she's holding her dog toy and follows along. I collect illustrated books and I can say, this is well written, engaging and illustrated... it's a must for any childs (and adults) collection... well done!

  • Great lessons about what signs say!

When I say I was excited to see this book come out that was an understatement. Working as a signage and environmental graphic designer I wasn't really exposed to the depth of navigation planning goes into each and every sign as a child or teenager and didn't know that there was a profession around it.

Lauren Stern and James Bevelander have perfectly laid out a children's book about learning to read signs, something that I believe has been missing. I'll be using this book in my college level class as an open in my next fall class about signage design and navigating the way.

Thank you, Lauren, for making this wonderful book.

  • Why I love this book!

“I loved everything about the book! The content, the message, the illustrations were top notch. As a grandma who’s read hundreds of books to her young grandsons… I would rate this among the best! Be sure it’s in your child or grandchild’s library.”

  • A clever story about signage and wayfinding

“Signs Have Much to Say is a clever way to make young children aware of the signage all around them. The author, Lauren Stern, uses rhyme to tell the tale of a little girl and her dog as they venture through their world. She draws on her own childhood for an authentic, realistic view of a child's life.

As in all good picture books, the artist, James Bevelander, uses the illustrations to move the story along adding detail and surprise. The young reader is challenged to find the hidden messages on each page as the story progresses. This book would be a good addition to a young child's library either in school or at home.”

  • Beautiful book our toddler loves!

What a wonderful book and fantastic customer service! The clever rhymes and beautiful illustrations have been such a fun way to support our toddler’s love of exploring our own neighborhood and pointing out local street signs! Highly recommend!

  • Amazing kids book about signs

“Randomly came across this and decided to pick it up for my kid. It is a really unique kids story that I personally have not seen. It’s refreshing to have a story that focuses on something like signs that isn’t normally taught extensively. Kids learn just a few of the basic signs, but not to the extent they are exposed in this story. My daughter loves this book and asks me to read it to her over and over. The illustrations and story is so much fun. My daughter will ask about each of the signs and what they mean. It’s great to be able to teach her. If you’re looking for a great story with awesome imagery you should definitely pick this up. Your kid will love it.”

  • Great book for kids!!

“This book teaches children how to navigate using signs as tools to help them. It is a clever approach and very useful to teach kids how to use these tools to make navigating easier. My granddaughter loves this book!!”

  • Adorable and relatable

“We enjoyed reading this adorable book from a new Charlotte, NC author ! My daughter was able to notice familiar places and signs that she sees all around. She loved the illustrations with little girl, dog and funny sign faces. I think this would be a wonderful addition to a child’s home library. As a teacher, I think it would also be a wonderful addition to a classroom library. Happy reading!”

  • Adorable book with great illustrations

“My (almost 3 year old) son adored this book! He loved the illustrations of the familiar places and the cute dog in the story. The rhymes are pretty catchy too.

He’s not one to sit still through an entire book when I read to him, but he listened to the entire thing and wanted to bring the book with him to bed! I highly recommend adding this to your child’s library!”

  • Such a unique book!

“This book is incredibly adorable and very kid friendly! I have seen many educational children's books, but I haven't come across a book on signage until this one. It is also a helpful tool with some great references to real-world signage companies! Truly something special!”

  • Fun, creative, & immersive!

“I loved the illustrations and storytelling used to introduce kids to the immersive world of signage and graphic design. I learned a few things myself and am excited to explore the world of design more with the resources provided in this book.”

  • Great Book!

“Our son really enjoyed getting this book about signs that are all around us and how they help us every day. It was informative but fun and really written at a level that a wide range of kids can enjoy it over and over again. Will definitely recommend it to other parents and gift it to kids in the future.”

  • Useful info in cute format

“This book helps kids understand the importance of reading signs....how they tell us where to go, what to do (and not do), and how to find help. An early teaching tool to help young children find their way should they become (God forbid) lost, disoriented, or in an unfamiliar place. Great book!”

  • A Creative and Fantastic Book

As a fellow experiential designer I knew I needed this book as soon as I saw it (as well as one for my niece and nephews too!)

This book is so well written and the illustrations are great! Highly recommend.

  • Excellent book about signs and wayfinding with adorable illustrations

“Lauren Stern has taken the topic of signs and wayfinding and made it accessible for children. The adorable sign characters make the signs come alive for kids. We homeschool our children and its an excellent addition to our home library. My four year old son is loving anything with a cute face right now and he enjoyed the sign characters in the book and wanted to read it again. My nine year old daughter also liked the book and enjoyed the different settings such as the spa and pool. I like how the little girl in the book has varied reactions to the signs depending on what they say and the setting. This shows how she interacts with the signage in a wide variety of settings where signs and wayfinding are essential.”

  • Awesome book for young children

“Love this book! Fun, informative way for young children to learn about signs! Great illustrations!”

  • Adventurous girl + her adorable dog

The cheerful rhymes and colorful illustrations in this book are so so appealing. I like how the main character is active, confident, and curious; and thanks to all the signs she encounters, she is safe where ever she goes and has good manners too. Lauren & Dewey pedal up a mountain, visit a museum, ride a train, and dip in a pool. A fun activity would be to take a young reader on a field trip to find signs from the story in real life.

  • Fun and Colorful Artwork Keep Children Engaged!

You’ll be happy to know that my son pulled your book out of his book shelf (containing around 50 books), looked straight at it, then handed it to me to read to him (he is 22 months). He sat through the whole thing! He has been in a phase where he does a page or two in a book, then we switch. Nope, not this time!
